“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.”
-Stephen Moss
What is Reggio Emilia inspired?
The Reggio Emilia philosophy is an approach to teaching, learning and advocacy for children. In its most basic form, it is a way of observing what children know, are curious about and what challenges them. Teachers record these observations to reflect on developmentally appropriate ways to help children expand their academic and social potentials. Long term projects connect core academic areas in and out of the classroom.
The Reggio Emilia philosophy is based upon the following set of principles:
- Children must have some say over what they learn; additionally, the senses play a big role in the learning process. Children’s learning is based on their interests.
- Children engage with their senses to help them learn and fully process something.
- Children are encouraged to interact with other children and explore the world through material items and relationships.
- Children should be encouraged to always express themselves and be given infinite means and opportunities to do so.
- Children are collaborators and learn through interaction within their communities.
What are Loose Parts?
Loose parts are natural objects or materials, which provide children with endless opportunities to build on their play. Loose parts offer children:
- Opportunities to create and expand their play skills.
- Materials that support their play and development.
Children enjoy exploring and playing in their environment by manipulating and creating experiences with the materials they have access to.
The benefit of loose parts providing many opportunities for children to be curious, creative and make meaning of the natural world around them.
